Ipinfo.io Alternative: Ipregistry vs Ipinfo Compared

Ipinfo (ipinfo.io) was founded in 2013 by Ben Dowling and is one of the best-known IP data providers. It is a solid service. Yet a number of Ipregistry customers came to us after using it. This page explains why, with an up-to-date comparison of plans, pricing, and included data.

Why companies use Ipregistry instead of Ipinfo

Pay for What You Use, With Everything Included

Ipinfo's pricing model is subscription-based: you pay every month, whether you consume your quota or not, and overages are billed on top. Usage patterns are rarely constant: an e-commerce website will see big spikes on Black Friday and quiet weeks in between.

With Ipregistry, you buy credits and spend them request by request. Credits never expire, there is no monthly fee, and every data field is included at every volume. There is no feature gate to a higher tier: carrier data, company name and domain, and VPN/proxy detection are part of every single lookup, including the 100,000 free lookups you get on signup. With Ipinfo, company data requires a custom Enterprise contract and carrier data requires the $130/month Max plan.

Low Response Time

Building a highly available and fast global API requires a lot of expertise. The Ipregistry API is distributed across multiple regions worldwide and serves continuously refreshed IP data directly from memory, which keeps response times in the low milliseconds from most locations. Rather than quoting a benchmark that will be outdated tomorrow, we suggest the honest test: run a few hundred lookups against both APIs from your own infrastructure and compare the latency distributions.

Accuracy Without Cheating

Through geolocation, you can map the IP addresses of your users to a country, region, city, latitude, and longitude. But no provider knows the precise location of every IP address, and how a provider handles uncertainty tells you a lot about its data.

A common practice in the industry is to fall back to the legal office location of the organization that owns the IP range when the actual usage location is unknown. The result looks precise, with a real city and real coordinates, and is often hundreds of kilometers wrong. Providers do this because a confident wrong answer looks more accurate in a demo than an honest null.

Ipregistry does not cheat on data: when we are not confident about a region or city, we return null for those fields rather than a misleading guess. Your fraud rules and analytics can then treat unknown as unknown, instead of silently acting on wrong locations. We also process operator-published geofeeds (RFC 8805) and corrections continuously to keep locations current.

Comprehensive IP and Threat Data

Ipregistry provides more than 65 data points in a single request: ASN and connection details, IP range, company, carrier, currency, time zone, security signals, and geolocation. No need to perform different requests or subscribe to different products to get the data you need. Fields are organized by category in a hierarchy that makes usage and understanding a breeze.

Advanced Dashboard Actions

Usage Monitoring

Ipinfo displays your API usage for different periods. Ipregistry goes further by letting you see hourly usage for the current day, broken down per API key.

Actionable Options

Ipregistry supports multiple API keys per account, so you can use one key per isolated concern: one for your website, one for your backend, one for a partner integration. This improves overall security. Each key has its own settings: domain and IP whitelisting restricts where a key can be used from, and per-key throttling caps how fast it can be consumed.
